About IJBNPA

What is IJBNPA?

IJBNPA (IJBNPA) is an open cccess, peer-reviewed online journal devoted to furthering the understanding of the behavioral aspects of diet and physical activity.

IJBNPA is unique in its focus on the behavioral aspects of diet and physical activity; its inclusion of multiple levels of analysis, including populations, groups and individuals; and its inclusion of epidemiology, and behavioral, theoretical and measurement research areas. Manuscripts that present theoretical innovations with respect to diet and physical activity behaviors are of particular interest.

IJBNPA considers manuscripts in the following areas:

  • Behavioral interventions (including community-based and clinical)
  • Population behaviors (including measurement, prevalence and etiology)
  • Predictors of behaviour
  • Innovative behavioral theories
  • Measurement issues
  • Policy and public health issues

The main criteria for publication are methodologic quality, innovativeness, novelty, and contribution to the field.

Content overview

IJBNPA considers the following types of articles:

  • Commentaries: short, focused and opinionated articles on any subject within the journal's scope. These articles are usually related to a contemporary issue, such as recent research findings. They focus on specific issues and are about 800 words.
  • Debate articles: present an argument that is not essentially based on practical research. Debate articles can report on all aspects of the subject including sociological and ethical aspects.
  • Methodology articles: present a new experimental method, test or procedure. The method described may either be completely new, or may offer a better version of an existing method.
  • Research: reports of data from original research.
  • Reviews: comprehensive, authoritative, descriptions of any subject within the journal's scope. They have an educational aim and are 2000-3000 words.
  • Short reports: brief reports of data from original research, usually about 1500 words.

Peer review policies

  • The peer review process for IJBNPA is designed to ensure that the research published in the journal is methodologically and conceptually outstanding in quality and makes a significant contribution to the field.
  • Two external experts as well as the Co-Editors-in-Chief will generally review articles. A double-blinded peer review process is used to promote a fair and impartial evaluation of the submitted manuscripts. A maximum of two revisions are allowed.
  • IJBNPA accepts research articles that encompass a wide spectrum of scientific areas in behavioral nutrition and physical activity. The common element is that the results and conclusions are scientifically sound and of outstanding quality in methodology and conceptualization.
  • IJBNPA aims to publish quality research as quickly as possible. The electronic format is designed to facilitate rapid publication. Accepted articles are immediately posted in provisional PDF format on the journal website. Following checking of the web version, articles are available in full text (web) and PDF formats.

Edited by Robert Jeffery, Frank van Lenthe and Bente Wold, IJBNPA is supported by an expert Editorial Board.

Publishing in IJBNPA

All articles are listed in PubMed immediately upon acceptance (after peer review), and are covered by PubMed Central, Thomson Reuters (ISI), CABI, Embase and FSTA.

Articles in IJBNPA should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. However, because articles in this journal are not printed, they do not have page numbers. Instead, they have a unique article number.

The following citation:

Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act 2004, 2:1

refers to article 1 from volume 2 of the journal.

As an online journal, IJBNPA does not have issue numbers. Each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

To keep up to date with the latest articles from IJBNPA, why not register to receive alerts? Registration also enables you to customise your subject areas of interest, store your searches, and submit your manuscripts.

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to IJBNPA using the online submission system. Full details of how to submit a manuscript are given in the instructions for authors.

General journal policies

IJBNPA is published by BioMed Central, part of Springer Science+Business Media. BioMed Central is committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is open access. That means it is freely and universally accessible online, it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free access repository, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the BioMed Central copyright and licence agreement. IJBNPA however, has taken this further by making all its content open access.

IJBNPA's articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications. The journal is also participating in the British Library's e-journals pilot project, and plans to deposit copies of all articles with the British Library.

BioMed Central is working closely with Thomson Reuters (ISI) to ensure that citation analysis of articles published in IJBNPA will be available.

IJBNPA is able to deliver summaries of frequently updated content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds. These are accessible via the orange "XML" button at the top of the list of recent articles or the list of most accessed articles. For more information about RSS feeds see our publisher's website.

If you would like to help raise awareness of IJBNPA, why not download the journal's leaflet and poster? You will need Acrobat Reader to open them.
